Cindy Fallsen Online Museums

It is so cool to be able to access all of this information online. I can now study sitting on my Little Rock Patio Furniture with my laptop. These sorts of resources also reduce the expense of travel. International Travel Insurance, airline costs, hotels, and time away from the university all add up… Continue

Henry Walters' Library Online Front-Page News

It's a red-letter day for the Walters Art Museum and Henry Walters' Library Online! We made the front page of the Baltimore Sun! The article describes the musuem's project to digitize the Islamic manuscript collection and even includes an action shot of Ariel and a quote from Diane, as well as lots of discussion with our new assistant curator of manuscripts Amy Landau. Everyone on the team is really pleased, and so is the museum's director. Have a look at the article; we're off to celebrate!… Continue

Henry Walters' Library Online Hardworking Summer

Hello from Henry Walters' Library Online! It's been a while since we last posted, and that's because we've been busy. All summer we've been digitizing away with very good results. We've broken the "40 barrier," meaning that more than 40 manuscripts now exsist as full digital surrogates with accompanying metadata that conforms to the highest international standards for digital preservation. It also means that we've generated a lot of data, which is slowly but surely making its way to the outside… Continue

Walters Art Museum NEH Funded Project to Digitize Walters Islamic manuscripts

In an NEH funded project, running from September 2008 to September 2010, The Walters Art Museum aims to create digital surrogates of all its Islamic Manuscripts, and to make them accessible to all, free of charge. We are beginning to see the results of this initiative, and so blogging on this site seems to be a natural extensive of our mission. One of the highlights of the Walters Collection of Islamic Manuscripts is a copy of Piri Reis, Book on Navigation. It is a masterpiece of Ottoman art. S… Continue

Walters Art Museum Islamic Manuscript Images on this site

Under my photos, we have added 12 images from Walters Islamic Manuscripts, and will continue to add them as the project progresses. They come with descriptions very closely based on those of Adam Gacek, who is cataloging the Walters Islamic Manuscripts as part of the NEH grant. Continue

Henry Walters' Library Online As the Page Turns

The Henry Walters Library Online Project has been moving along. Lately, we've been chewing our way through several meaty projects, including correcting some inconsistancies in our existing metadata and imaging W.658, a beautiful 17th-century book of cartography written by Piri Reis, an Ottoman-Turkish admiral and geographer. The Piri Reis is a breathtaking manuscript (we'll post pix here soon), full of detailed maps that let the imagination wander to far-off exotic lands. But it is also a looon… Continue

Henry Walters' Library Online The Life of a Digitizer

It's a rainy day today in Baltimore--tucked away in our little corner of the Walters Art Museum we can only see the outside from the skylights outside our lab door, and when it rains (or snows) it gives the place the feeling of being cocooned in. This, unfortunately, results in sleepy afternoons! (Don't worry, boss, our productivity is still holding steady.) The Henry Walters' Library Online project is situated in the Asian art wing of the museum, in a little room that used to be a gallery of T… Continue

Will Noel Walters Art Museum upgrades collections website

The Walters Art Museum has launched a major upgrade to its collections website. It includes nearly 5,000 searchable objects available to the public — whether local or across the globe. This is a dramatic increase over the approximately 800 objects of the previous version. As part of a larger Walters technology initiative, this site allows everyone from a casual virtual visitor to a renowned researcher to browse works of art records from antiquity to the 19th century by categories such as artist,… Continue

Michael Toth Yes We Scan!

We've enjoyed the support of a range of leaders in various fields over the course of both the Archimedes Palimpsest program and our related efforts. Amongst those who have supported us and our data hosting for the world is Carl Malamud. One good deed leads to another, so we'll note that Carl is seeking nomination as the Public Printer of the United States. We can assure you he will certainly shake up the GPO! More information is available at the site yeswescan.orgContinue

Henry Walters' Library Online New Camera!

It's happy days for the Henry Walters' Library Online. We've just received our new camera upgrade and everything appears to be working as it should. We're now shooting with a 33-megapixel camera (that's 33 million pixels!!!) It's a large-format camera body with a digital back and a 120mm lens, all custom-designed and built by Stokes Imaging in Texas to go with their software. So far things are going great, which is a big relief. We had tried to install this camera a few months ago and the image… Continue

Germaine Warkentin Syriac medical text

If you are looking for scholarly advice on the medical text in the Syriac palimsest, a good place to inquire might be the science history list MERSENNE, where medical history news and queries are frequently posted. Perhaps someone on that list knows someone who knows someone ... etc. I have a couple of links -- not sure which one is for signing up, but try www.jiscmail.ac.uk or http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/MERSENNE Good luck with this! Henry Walters' Library Online Welcome to Henry Walters' Library Online!

This blog is being posted by Diane Bockrath and Ariel Tabritha, digitization specialists on a new project that is setting out to digitize the Walter's manuscript collection. Will Noel, our fearless leader, invited us to share a description of the project and some photos with the Archie community. We welcome any comments and questions. We'll also be updating on project developments and adding some of our own observations about digitization. This project began production in September 2008 (althou… Continue

Will Noel A New Challenge: A Syriac Palimpsest

This blog is concerned with another project being undertaken at The Walters Art Museum, concerning a Syriac Palimpsest. Many - but not all of the same team as imaged the Archimedes Palimpsest, are involved in this project as well. Its a tough nut to crack. Look for contributions and updates on this blog. Continue

Michael Toth Imaging Regions of Interest

As we've discussed the Archimedes Palimpsest images and data at various forums, image scientists have asked about the regions of interest (ROI's) where scholars are still looking for more details from the images. In response to these queries, Reviel Netz cites the following: "Clearly the questions I have now are with the Stomachion page (177-172), the penultimate Method page (158-159) and the last Method page (165-168). "In 177-172 nothing is easy and any region offers some room for improveme… Continue

Will Noel Archimedes on Google Books and other interfaces

"The Archimedes Palimpsest" on Google Books is but one way in which the dataset at Archimedespalimpsest.net can be used, but it is a cool one. The images used are generated from the multispectral images and processed to strip away the prayerbook texts to reveal the undertexts in the folios. These pages have not been seen like this since they were erased and written over by Johannes Myronas in 1229. They are not the most legible images that the team has produced, but they are the most dramatic. A… Continue

Neel Smith Diagrams

I've blogged at this publicly visible URL (with further links) the opening of Gabe Weaver's Episteme project on sourceforge. If you're interested in Archimedes' diagrams, and how we can represent and use them in a digital environment, you'll want to see this! Continue

Michael Toth Lack of Sleep

Doug and Carl had a very late night (actually early morning) pushing data about on and between both coasts of the US, but looks like they are going to make it with a superb data set available for all as Archimedes is set free! Continue
