Medieval Manuscripts Revealed on the Web

Ed Cone's Blog Know It All includes the Posting: "Archimedes and the Bit Rot Problem" in which he discusses the challenges Vint Cerf has cited in preserving digital information (some in the Library of Congress have cited similar).

Thanks to guidance from the owner, Vint, folks from NASA and a range of others, we believe we have created as good a model as possible for the preservation of this information in digital form. Hopefully the images, data and metadata will be replicated, updated and hosted on systems around the world for years to come. While we chose the broadest international consensus standards, did we chose the right ones and apply them correctly in this program?

Let us know your thoughts and perspective as we refine our model in support of future imaging projects and institutions.

Thanks,

Mike Toth

The best method of preservation is the one that made this project possible -- a physical copy. Print up reproductions of the palimpsest. Even a limited distribution of copies around the world would be an excellent hedge against any future digital issues.
